Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet store in the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would change our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with Alex disproved the belief that birds can only imitate human language, but not understand the meaning.

What is Alex?

Alex was able to comprehend the meanings of words which is a rare feat for birds. When he heard the word "grape" and he realized that it was not a vegetable but a fruit. This was due to the way that Dr. Pepperberg taught him words. She and a colleague would role-play the roles of teacher and student. Alex observed and listened. He was rewarded for correct pronunciation and definition by receiving the object that went with the word.

Another fascinating aspect of the method she trained Alex was that she taught him the meanings behind words, rather than the sounds. This was an innovative method, as it is typically the situation that pet parrots are taught words to be fun only. When owners use a particular word they aren't necessarily meaning what they're saying. However with Alex who spoke the word he was using, he was really meaning what he said.

While many people are impressed by the fact that Alex could acquire so many things but some scientists have said that it is unfair to compare Alex with humans in terms of intelligence. They pointed out that while Alex could communicate, he was not proficient in using logic expressions such as "if x then y."

Alex's work on animal consciousness and intelligence is controversial. He was one of the world's most famous talking parrots up until his death in 2007 at the age 31.

What was Alex's personality?

This technique is referred to as the rival model and it has since become an established method of teaching animals.

In addition to his cognitive abilities, Alex was a friendly and playful dog who loved to play with his owners. He was often an advisor and cheerleader during training sessions, encouraging or encouraging them to perform better. He was extremely observant, and he was able to discern the emotions of his human friends. He would jump into his owner's arm when she was smiling, and cling to her leg when she was upset or sad.

What was Alex's influence?

In his short lifetime, Alex changed many lives. His legacy is a testament to his determination and character. He was also able to count up to six object sets and displayed math skills that were quite advanced at the time for birds.

He also was able to communicate with other animals using sign language, and had a good grasp of grammar. He employed a method of training called "rival model," which involved two trainers modeling to the bird what they wanted it to learn. The trainers would switch their positions frequently so that the bird was in a position to interact with them both and receive rewards and attention from each of them.

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was named a National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. He was able to accomplish many things throughout his life because of his strength of character and his determination to live life on his own terms.
