This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine the sex. Once the bird's sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Lolita's care

For years activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their families until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother.
