Upgrades can give you boost in specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of the item by +3. A random extra substat is also added to each upgrade.

The more modernized gear generally has a more value in trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or a very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for those with higher variance due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrade upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. However, the item that is used to upgrade will be consumed forever and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the item upgrading level, however they'll always be cheaper than buying new gear. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will show the item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the item slot, and the current level of the item upgrades. For instance weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Item upgraders can be found at many locations, including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon as well as the chance to obtain a new recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades require several methods that are both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. Once the player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This is regardless of whether the items are from a different set of equipment.

The discount applies to all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a couple of options. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specialized and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1 and are available in 4 ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests can only be used on equipment that is of a particular rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The most basic and straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the more complex one may require as many as 20 crests based on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the upgrade process. For item level upgrade instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, item Level Upgrade or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests only have one use, so it's important to use them wisely. It is recommended to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can find and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The discount for the entire account will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
