Lolita's Personality

Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They thrive in well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If they are not socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only an excellent pet, but they are also a great pet for children.

Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a nuisance to those living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or near children who may be frightened by their noise.

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are hard to differentiate. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is known, breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. It is a lengthy process and the owner must be patient and recognize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help correct any behavior issues.

Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member in a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean not a concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that connect with their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

As is the case with any species of animal, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is contingent on a balanced diet. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

As her captor does not have to disclose this information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an important part in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to relocate the whale from her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
